Sustainable drug release from polycaprolactone coated chitin-lignin gel fibrous scaffolds

Abstract: Non-healing wounds have placed an enormous stress on both patients and healthcare systems worldwide. Severe complications induced by these wounds can lead to limb amputation or even death and urgently require more effective treatments. Electrospun scaffolds have great potential for improving wound healing treatments by providing controlled drug delivery. Previously, we developed fibrous scaffolds from complex carbohydrate polymers [i.e. chitin-lignin (CL) gels]. However, their application was limited by solubi… Show more

“…Many biopolymers with a biodegradable nature can perform as described previously such as PCL, chitin, silk fibroin, and PLA [ 183 , 184 , 185 , 186 , 187 ]. However, the use of chitosan for controlled drug delivery has been of great interest in nanomedicine research [ 188 ].…”

“…Chitin-amphiphilic ion/quaternary ammonium salt having antibacterial and antipollution effects was also used for wound healing [ 226 ]. Chitin-lignin gels, as an extracellular matrix-like scaffold, were applied as wound dressing material that had a property of sustainable drug release especially antibiotics [ 227 ]. Recently, chitin has been applied as a tissue adhesive.…”

“…The microbial contamination of a surgical wound leads to surgical site infections (SSIs), which require additional treatment and lead to prolonged recovery times [1,2]. To prevent infections, antibiotics are mostly applied systemically [3]. As this may lead to side effects or drug resistance, the local delivery of antibiotics to the surgical site is advantageous [3].…”
