Abstract: Since horn fly populations became established throughout Brazil, complaints regarding control failure have increased around the country. A broad survey to evaluate the susceptibility of horn flies to both organophosphate (OP) and pyrethroid insecticides was conducted from October 2000 to April 2003. Bioassays using filter papers impregnated with cypermethrin, permethrin or diazinon were conducted on 154 horn fly populations in 14 states and 78 municipalities. Resistance to cypermethrin, the active ingredient p… Show more

“…Therefore, failure of horn fly control was expected to occur in those ranches, as informed during visits. The widespread resistance of horn flies to cypermethrin found in this survey confirmed previous reports from the state (BARROS et al, 2007) and all over the country (BARROS et al, 2012). Previous cypermethrin RFs detected by Barros et al (2007) did not exceed 91.3 (most below 60), while in the present study the lowest RF was 89.4 and most were above 140, suggesting that pyrethroid resistance is getting worse in the region.…”

“…However, continued reliance on commercial pyrethroid products for controlling cattle pests led to development of pyrethroid resistance in horn fly populations and became a major concern throughout the country (BARROS et al, 2012).…”

“…Indeed, the horn fly population of the present study was more susceptible to diazinon than the susceptible reference strain. Similar finding has been reported in pyrethroid-resistant horn fly populations 17,18,19 and the increased OP-susceptibility may result from an increased diazinon activation by mixed function oxidases 20 . High levels of horn fly pyrethroid resistance have been reported in Uruguay 21 and, although the involved mechanisms remain unknown, it is possible that mixed function oxidases play a relevant role in resistance to pyrethroids in horn fly populations from Uruguay as has been reported in Brazil 22 .…”
