Survivin modulatory role in autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases

Abstract: Baculoviral IAP repeat containing 5 (BIRC5) gene encodes the important protein as survivin, a multifunctional protein, which is involved in cellular and molecular networks, progression of cell cycle, homeostasis, developmental morphogenesis, and apoptosis. The proximal BIRC5 promoter possesses specific binding sites for key transcription factors such as nuclear factor κB and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3. Upregulation of survivin exacerbates the autoimmune diseases (AIDs) including multipl… Show more

“…[ 35 ] Aldo‐ketoreductase family 1, member B8 ( Akr1b8 ), a critical protein in the proliferation and injury repair of the colonic epithelium, [ 36 ] was upregulated in WDPP, RCPP, and RDPP groups compared with the WC and RC groups. Apoptosis inhibitor survivin ( Birc5 [ 37 ] ) was upregulated in RDPP group and proapoptotic regulators ( Bcl2l11 [ 38 ] and Ptpn13 [ 39 ] ) were downregulated in both RCPP and RDPP groups (Figure 3c). Taken together, these altered genes could be associated with the development of cell proliferation.…”

“…Up-regulation of BIRC5 in autoimmune diseases is reported in recent studies. 4,7,10,21 High BIRC5 level is found in PBMCs of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 12 myasthenia gravis 21 and multiple sclerosis. 22 We first analyzed BIRC5 gene expression levels in PBMCs by quantitative PCR analysis.…”

“…9 High BIRC5 gene expression considered in fetal development and pathologic conditions including tumors and autoreactive cell survival. 8,10,11 Recently, survivin dysregulation is taken into consideration strongly in prognosis and disease activity of autoimmune diseases. 10,12 Defective apoptosis is the irrevocable problem in autoimmune diseases.…”
