ABSTRACT. The (RR = 2.34, and RR = 1.75, griculture is a challenging sector for efforts to promote occupational safety and health. Farming is commonly based on family entrepreneurship. Many characteristic hazards related to the workers, work environment, and work tasks have been identified, but a recent review of farm safety interventions (DeRoo and Rautiainen, 2000) concluded that there is little evidence that farm safety educational programs are effective. The effectiveness of education has also been questioned by Murphy (1981), Geller et al. (1990, and Reis and Elkind (1997). Influencing the attitudes of the farming population is laborious, and implementing safety regulations and enforcement is culturally unacceptable. Therefore, new approaches should be sought. The organizational injury theory has become a prevailing paradigm in safety science recently. The focus has been on management issues rather than on personal characteristics or behavior (Harvey, 1984;Laflamme, 1990;Reason, 1995). However, the organizational injury theory has been developed for organizations that involve complex technology and/or employ many workers. This study aims to determine whether the organizational injury theory applies to farming as well. Literature ReviewThe literature on injury theories and related empirical findings were reviewed to form a hypothesis for this study. The hypothesis was tested with empirical data using a cross-sectional case-control design.

A Systematic Review of Interventions to Prevent Childhood Farm Injuries

ABSTRACT. Objective. The goal of the study was to systematically review the global body of evidence surrounding the effectiveness of interventions for the prevention of acute pediatric agricultural injuries. A specific focus was the effectiveness of the North American Guidelines for Children's Agricultural Tasks.Methods. Two reviewers independently screened studies and applied inclusion criteria on the basis of searches of 17 bibliographic databases (eg, Medline and Embase). We also screened reference lists of relevant studies and contacted experts in the area. Studies were included if they represented primary research, a comparison group was used, the study population included children or the intervention was directly applicable to children, and objective outcomes were reported. Two reviewers independently assessed the methodologic quality of included studies with the Downs and Black checklist. A qualitative analysis was performed because of extensive heterogeneity among studies.Results. We included 23 controlled studies, ie, 4 randomized, controlled trials, 5 controlled trials, and 14 quasiexperimental or observational studies. Only 8 of the relevant studies were published in peer-reviewed journals. School-based programs appeared to be effective at increasing short-term knowledge acquisition; outcomes were enhanced with active, hands-on participation, as opposed to passive activities. Safety day camps showed positive results for knowledge acquisition. Tractor training programs and community-and farm-based interventions showed mixed results. Studies examining the North American Guidelines for Children's Agricultural Tasks suggested that uptake improves if dissemination is accompanied by a farm visit from a safety specialist or if information about child development principles is provided in conjunction with the guidelines.Conclusions. There is a lack of randomized, controlled trials and community-based trials in this area. Studies primarily examined intermediate outcomes, such as knowledge acquisition; few studies evaluated changes in injury rates. The interventions targeted at children and youths that were evaluated focused on educational interventions. There is both the need and potential for the development and evaluation of injury control interventions for children, particularly programs addressing lethal injuries to young/preschool-aged children. Abstract:The people working in agriculture face with various dangerous factors. Therefore, the agriculture sector is considered as the most risky groups among all the sectors. The rate of work accidents in Turkey is far above the average in the developed countries. In order to prevent the work accidents, the characteristics of accidents should be determined and the preliminary precautions should be taken. As it is the case in the developing countries, sufficient study about labor security and worker health is not available in Turkey, either. In this study, the work accident characteristic of agriculture sector in Turkey has been tried to be determined. The values in agriculture sector have been compared with the averages of the other sectors and the differences have been determined. It has been regarded that this study will be a positive step for decreasing the rate of work accidents, which brings together many physical and moral burdens in Turkey which has 20 millions of agricultural population.

Abstract: CAISP is a new agricultural injury surveillance program in Canada. Data from this system are actively used to inform prevention initiatives, and to indicate priorities for etiological and experimental research in the Canadian agricultural setting.
