Variability in Response to Bilateral Medial Rectus Recessions in Infantile Esotropia

“…Proponents of three-or four-muscle surgery have argued that large medial rectus recessions alone constitute a uniform approach and even "maximal" medial rectus recessions are inadequate in many patients and do not allow for truly graduated surgery. [19][20][21] Although the majority of unsatisfactory outcomes in our series were undercorrections, our data suggest this is not due to inadequate dosing but rather to variability in dose-response. The patients with undercorrections had a surgical dose-response of only 58% of the successful group, whereas the patients with overcorrections had a dose-response of 160% of successful patients.…”
