Zinc oxide nanostructures such as nanosheets (NS) and nanoflowers (NF) were obtained by a facile hydrothermal synthesis using zinc chloride (ZnCl2) as precursor with low molar concentrations and a short synthesis time (2 h) at 200 °C. By means of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements, the wurtzite-type ZnO structure was confirmed with high crystalline quality. SEM micrographs showed the influence of ZnCl2 concentration on ZnO morphology; ZnO NF were obtained at low concentrations (0.02 and 0.05 M), while ZnO NS were seen for higher concentrations (0.2–0.6 M) and their thicknesses can be estimated from 15 to 60 nm. In addition, TEM images showed a large number of pores with sizes below 15 nm in both ZnO nanostructures. Raman and photoluminescence displayed the surface defects density for ZnO nanostructures. Raman spectra showed the E1(LO) mode localized at ∼581 cm−1, associated with oxygen vacancies and zinc interstitials, being more intense for ZnO NF, while photoluminescence results showed a strong yellow-orange emission (centered from 587 to 618 nm) relative to UV emission, being more intense for ZnO NF. These properties reveal further potential for high performance luminescent devices based on ZnO NF and NS.

Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets show good electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance in electrochemical devices. However, strong van der Waals attraction between adjacent nanosheets causes GO materials to collapse, reducing the exposed surfaces and limiting electron/ion transport in porous electrodes. GO nanosheets mixed with Zn5(OH)8(NO3)2⋅2 H2O (ZnON) nanoplates create a layered composite structure. Exposing the resultant GO/ZnON to 2‐methylimidazole vapor leads to the conversion of ZnON into the zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF‐8. The transformation of ZnON into ZIF‐8 leads to a huge physical expansion of the interlayer space between the GO sheets. Annealing the material at high temperature caused the ZIF‐8 to be converted into highly porous nitrogen‐doped carbon, but the GO nanosheets maintained a large separation and high surface area. The morphology and porous structure of the post‐annealing carbon material was sensitive to the initial ratio of ZnON to GO. The optimized sample exhibited several favorable features, including a large surface area, high degree of graphitization, and a high amount of nitrogen doping. Using chemical vapor deposition of metal–organic frameworks to physically expand nanomaterials is a novel method to increase the surface area and porosity of materials. It enabled the synthesis of nanoporous carbon electrodes with high capacitance, good rate capability, and long cyclic stability in supercapacitor devices.

ZnO nanorods (NRs) grown on different ZnO seed layers deposited at various Ar-O2 ambient conditions and the morphologies of the seed layers that affect their response to nitric oxide (NO) gas were investigated. The sensing performance of the devices fabricated with the seed layers deposited under an O2-rich condition tends to deteriorate. We believe that the surface roughness, grain size, and defect concentration of the seed layer are responsible for this phenomenon. Despite the response to the gas was found to be less dependent on NR length, the gas sensing response is significantly dependent on the oxygen vacancy concentration and the exposure of the NR structure to the NO gas ambient surface. Excellent gas response (57.5% at 1 ppm and 7.1% at 100 ppb of NO gas) was achieved at room temperature-superior to the response presented by other proposed methods. This study not only proposes the potential of ZnO-NRs for high-performance NO gas sensor devices but also offers a simple and low-cost method to optimize the response without using any catalyst and additional treatment.
