“…As a result of the awareness raising and research results borne out of the contributions of these four countries, additional nations have begun acknowledging youth as both potential providers and receivers of care. The most advanced of the new countries is Canada, which can be seen holding a ''preliminary'' designation because of the operation of a handful of dedicated young carer programs that have assisted an estimated 1250 young carers since their inception in 2005 (Stamatopoulos 2015b). Many studies have highlighted the importance of responding to these needs (Moore & McArthur, ; Nigel et al., ; Purcal, Hamilton, Thomson, & Cass, ; Stamatopoulos, ; Watson, ). However, it is often difficult for children to ensure their own developmental spaces.…”

“…The third aspect of the findings focuses on families’ cooperation with formal and informal support networks. This is a frequently discussed issue in research and policies related to young carers (Becker & Becker, ; Berggren & Hanson, ; McAndrew et al., ; Metzing & Schnepp, ; Moore & McArthur, ; Nichols et al., ; Stamatopoulos, ). This study suggests that cooperation with formal and informal networks is important.…”

“…The movement of women into the workplace in the past decades has made it more challenging for families to care for their elders at home and has led to an increased reliance on younger caregivers. 3 In the context of limited resources in health care, supporting young carers is a strategic investment in the future health and well-being of a large group of Canadian youth.…”
