The role of informal social support in needs assessment: proposal and application of a model to assess immigrants' needs in the south of Spain

Lynam's (1985) phenomenological study of immigrant women in Canada confirmed the importance of diverse social connections for access to community support. She found that mothers had limited support when they restricted their contact to an insider social group consisting of kin from the same country of origin and lacked understanding of the social values or conventions surrounding interactions with outsiders, such as professionals.…”
