Suplementação com vitamina A em gestantes e puérperas brasileiras: uma revisão sistemática

Abstract: It seems that the advantages of postpartum supplementation were not established in the Brazilian program, although the supplementation contributes to a better nutritional status of vitamin A for both the child and the puerperal woman and increases the offer of vitamin A for the newborn through the breast milk.

“…In Brazil, a recent retrospective cross-sectional study concluded that the use of multivitamin supplements containing vitamin A during pregnancy prevents VAD regardless of the source administered [132]. The other Brazilian study available on the impact of vitamin A supplementation included only postpartum women [133].…”

“…Vitamin A supplementation during pregnancy can influence both maternal and fetal health, especially in areas with a high risk of deficiency [214]. Supplementation during pregnancy is primarily used to build both maternal and fetal retinol stores as a guard against deficiency both in the prenatal and postnatal periods [215,216]. Supplementation in prenatal studies is usually conducted using large, weekly doses of 7000 RE (retinol equivalents) either as retinyl palmitate or as beta-carotene.…”

“…Supplementation trials for vitamin A are typically conducted in areas where vitamin A deficiency is widespread [216,218] and focus on achieving additional vitamin A content in breast milk with mega-doses of vitamin A [218]. These studies show that in at-risk or deficient women large doses up to 200,000 IU vitamin A as retinyl palmitate can improve vitamin A content in breast milk, and subsequently in infants without adverse effects.…”

“…Another systematic review evaluated high-dose VA on blood and milk VA and found significant elevation in milk VA in 9 of 11 studies and significant elevation in blood in 4 of 9 studies compared with control groups ( 73 ). A review of supplementation in Brazilian pregnant and postpartum women found groups receiving VAS had increased breastmilk VA relative to control groups ( 74 ).…”
