Abstract-In this paper, a numerical method for improving the performance of the beamforming algorithm and the MUSIC algorithm for TOA (Time-of-arrival) estimation is presented. It has been shown that the conventional beamforming algorithm and the MUSIC algorithm can be used for time delay estimation.Using the beamforming algorithm and the MUSIC algorithm for TOA estimation, the initial estimate for the TOA is obtained. To improve the accuracy of the TOA estimation, we apply the Newton iteration to the initial estimate. The initial estimates obtained from the beamforming algorithm and the MUSIC algorithm are updated to obtain the final estimates which are more accurate than the initial estimates in terms of the RMSE (Root Mean Square Error). This study develops the preprocessing theory for time-reversal multiple signal classification (TR-MUSIC) imaging from the one-dimensional (time-domain) gating proposed in earlier papers to a two-dimensional one. Although the one-dimensional gating technique for TR-MUSIC mitigates the effect of noise as well as reduces the required number of antenna elements, the resulting image is subject to focusing errors when there are many targets in the gated region. In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional (angle-and-time-domain) gating technique based on the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and spatial FFT processing. By using these transforms and gating iteratively, we can reduce the number of targets to be detected at one time. The TR-MUSIC technique for the gated data provides more reliable images and precisely estimated coordinates compared with the previous work.

Abstract-Super-resolution algorithms used in radar imaging, e.g., MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC), can help us to get much higher resolution image beyond what is limited by the signal's bandwidth. We focus on MUSIC imaging algorithm in the paper and investigate the uniqueness and effectiveness conditions of the MUSIC algorithm when used in 1-D radar range imaging. Unlike conventional radar resolution analysis, we introduced the concept of resolution threshold from Direction of Arrival (DOA) into the MUSIC radar range imaging, we derive an approximate expression of theoretical resolution threshold for 1-D MUSIC imaging algorithm through the approach of asymptotic and statistical analysis to the null spectrum based on the perturbation theory of algebra and matrix theories. Monte Carlo simulations are presented to verify the work.
