Supergravity and the largeNlimit of theories with sixteen supercharges

Abstract: We consider field theories with sixteen supersymmetries, which includes U(N) Yang-Mills theories in various dimensions, and argue that their large N limit is related to certain supergravity solutions. We study this by considering a system of D-branes in string theory and then taking a limit where the brane worldvolume theory decouples from gravity. At the same time we study the corresponding Dbrane supergravity solution and argue that we can trust it in certain regions where the curvature (and the effective st… Show more

“…In [2], a proposal relating string theory on near horizon Dp-brane geometries to d = p+1 dimensional super Yang-Mills (SYM) theories with sixteen supercharges was put forward. These so called domain wall/QFT dualities, later developed in [3,4,5], provide the simplest setting in which general ideas of holography can be tested in more interesting situations involving non-trivial warped geometries and running dilatons.…”

“…The case K 0 < 0 is clearly related to the one discussed here by an S-duality. 5 We can easily make contact with the generic IR solution in [10]. It depends on three parameters subject to a constraint.…”

“…The thermodynamic properties of Dp-branes are well-known, so we will present here only a brief summary. The original literature, including [15]- [17], can be consulted for further details. The entropy of the Dp-brane solution (2.1) is…”
