The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different intercropping and spacing arrangements of corn (Zea mays L) and crotalaria (Crotalaria spp) on the agronomic characteristics, chemical composition and forage digestibility. The experiment was distributed in a randomized complete block design with a 2 × 2 + 1 factorial scheme. The treatments were two cultivation systems (corn + Crotalaria juncea (CCJ) intercropping, and corn + Crotalaria ochroleuca (CCO) intercropping), in two spacing arrangements (A1 (corn and crotalaria sown in the same row) and A2 (corn and crotalaria sown in alternate rows)) plus control (single corn monocropping (CSC)), with six replicates per treatment, for 2 years. Forage plants were harvested when the corn grain reached the doughy-farinaceous phenological stage. Forage mass (total and of each species), morphological composition, chemical composition and in vitro digestibility were evaluated. The forage accumulation was higher for the A1 spatial arrangement. In the second year, the highest total forage mass was verified in the CCO intercropping (11 140 kg/ha). The highest corn mass (9402 kg/ha) was observed for CSC. The highest crotalaria mass was observed in the CCJ intercropping in both years. Regarding the chemical composition, CCJ and CCO intercropping had the highest crude protein concentration. The lowest acid detergent fibre concentration was observed in CSC and CCO intercropping, directly reflecting the in vitro dry matter digestibility coefficients. It is concluded that C. ochroleuca, sown between corn rows, had higher forage accumulation and nutritive value among the treatments tested in this experiment.

Кроталярия ситниковая (Crotalaria juncea L.) -однолетнее бобовое растение многоцелевого назначения. Это древнейшая лубяная культура, которая выращивается на полях тропических регионов для получения волокна (H.R. Bhandari с соавт., 2016, 2022). В 1791 году растение было привезено в Европу, где возделывается в качестве альтернативной сидеральной культуры. Доказано, что кроталярия производит достаточное количество сухого вещества, чтобы защитить почву от возможной эрозии, а также обеспечивает накопление азота в количестве, полезном для последующих культур в диверсифицированном севообороте (D. Scott с соавт., 2022, A.P. Barros с соавт., 2022). В США растение занимает одно из ведущих мест в списке промежуточных покровных культур. Сухая зеленая биомасса содержит от 18 до 22 % белка, но может идти на корм скоту лишь в ограниченном количестве (˂ 10 % от объема получаемого силоса), поскольку в ней на стадии цветения накапливается токсическое алкалоидное вещество монокроталин. В семенах содержится до 35-40 % белка, и также присутствует небольшая доля (до 0,1 %) токсичных дегидропирролизидиновых алкалоидов (триходезмин, джунсеин, апигенин-7-4'-0-диглюкозид, апигенин-7-глюкуронид, лектин, сенеционин и сенецифиллин) и аминокислот (-амино--оксиламинопропионовая, -аминоксиламиномасляная и/или ,-диаминомасляная кислота) (V.B. Malashetty с соавт., 2015; F. Prada с соавт., 2020). Их включение в рацион животных требует особого подхода и по возможности нежелательно. Основной нетоксичный сорт, используемый в настоящее время в США, -Tropic Sun. У других сортов накопление токсичной концентрации алкалоидов в биомассе происходит на стадии цветения, через 60 сут после посева, поэтому биомассу растений на силос следует убирать в этот срок (J.E. Garzon с соавт., 2021; J.B. Morris с соавт., 2015). Отмечено, что обрезка побегов до 30 см через 60-100 сут после посева и повторное выращивание в течение 70 сут увеличивают содержание азота в биомассе (A.S. Abdul-Baki с соавт., 2001). В современной системе биологического земледелия в России кроталярия также может быть использована в качестве нетрадиционной покровной культуры для армирования почвенного грунта, улучшения плодородия и проведения мероприятий по рекультивации. Ареалом для ее возможного выращивания могут служить южные регионы с теплым умеренным климатом, в частности Краснодарский край, Республики Адыгея и Крым. В семенах культуры найдены полисахариды (галактоманнаны) -биологически активные вещества, обладающие ростостимулирующим действием в отношении других растений (Р.П. Закирова с соавт., 2020). Эти метаболиты, получаемые в результате процесса рафинирования (дегуммирования) растительного масла, извлекаемого из семян, могут быть сопоставимы по качеству с экстрактами семян из другой востребованной в настоящее время однолетней бобовой культуры -гуара (Cyamopsis tetragonolоba (L.) Maize is a major food crop in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), and its productivity is affected by climate change-adaptive sustainable management practices. A 2-year field study (2019/20 and 2020/21 growing seasons) was carried out to evaluate the effect of sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.) living mulch management on maize (Zea mays L.) production. Three sunn hemp planting periods were simultaneous with maize planting (P1), V15 maize growth stage (P2), and R1 maize growth stage (P3) and three densities 16.1 plants m−2 (D1-low), 32.1 plants m−2 (D2-medium), and 48.1 plants m−2 (D3-high). The intercrop components were planted in a split-plot treatment arrangement as an additive series with three replications and laid out in a randomized complete block design under the in-field rainwater harvesting (IRWH) technique. The growing season conditions revealed significant differences in rainfall distribution. Therefore, the planting period had highly significant (p < 0.001) effects on sunn hemp biomass, with an LSD value of 610.2 kg ha−1, showing that the highest was obtained in P2 (2636.7 kg ha−1) compared to P3 (811.3 kg ha−1). However, the P3 treatment resulted in maize grain yield penalty, with yields as follows: P3 (2775.2 kg ha−1), sole maize (3263.8 kg ha−1), P2 (3281.9 kg ha−1), and P1 (3287.8 kg ha−1). P2 yielded a significantly (p < 0.05) high-income equivalent ratio of 2.09, indicating a 109% advantage for increasing farmers' income by integrating sunn hemp under the no-till area of IRWH. P1 and P2 sunn hemp planting periods are viable options for smallholder farmers in summer rainfall regions to improve economic benefits.
