Suitable Combination Between Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin and Four Plant Leaf Extracts to Control Spodoptera litura (Fabricius)

Background The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glov. (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a major insect pest on a wide range of plants that causes high damage and transmits plant viruses. This study was carried out to evaluate an indigenous isolate, Beauveria bassiana (Bb), and extracts of 5 plant species: Psiadia penninervia, Pulicaria crispa, Euryops arabicus, Salvia officinalis, and Ochradenus baccatus against A. gossypii, as individual and combined treatments to estimate their compatibility under laboratory conditions. Also, the antifungal activity of these plant extracts against B. bassiana was evaluated. Results LC50 value was 8.64 × 104 spores/ml of Bb against A. gossypii, while LC50 values of the tested 5 plant extracts on A. gossypii were 103.64, 879.92, 747.90, 783.28, and 262.42 μg/ml for P. penninervia, P. crispa, E. arabicus, S. officinalis, and O. baccatus, respectively. Both P. penninervia and O. baccatus extracts had the highest antifungal activities against Bb and were significantly different from the other 3 plant extracts. After 24 h of treatment with the combination of Bb and each extract, no effect for these combinations on A. gossypii mortality was recorded. Meanwhile, 5 days after treatment, the combined treatments between Bb and each plant extract achieved a significant increase in mortality than that of the single treatment with Bb or plant extract, except for P. penninervia extract, which did not achieve a significant mortality increase when combined with B. bassiana than that of its single treatment. Conclusion P. penninervia extract was not compatible with B. bassiana, but the other tested 4 plant extracts were compatible with B. bassiana. These 4 plant extracts could be used to control aphids in combinations with B. bassiana. Further laboratory and field investigations are needed to examine the effects of these plant extracts on other insect pests or associated beneficial insects.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the primary commodity for the Indonesian people because most of the Indonesian population depends on rice. The armyworm pests Spodoptera litura causes irregular holes in the leaves, thus disrupting the photosynthesis process and reducing rice production, so it is necessary to treat the pest. Bacillus thuringiensis is a pathogenic bacterium for insects, such as S. litura. This study aimed to look at the effectiveness of B. thuringiensis on the mortality of S. litura on a laboratory and field scale. The research was conducted in the Agrotechnology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Musamus University. The research design was a complete randomized design (RAL). The research study was conducted on five treatment doses of B. thuringiensis, which were 20 g/500 ml of water; 40g/500 ml of water; 60 g/500 ml of water; 80 g/500 ml of water; 100 g/500 ml of water. Each treatment was repeated five times. The results showed that, applying B. thuringiensis can significantly decrease the population and intensity of S. litura. The highest mortality rate in laboratory trials was observed at a dose of 100 grams/500 ml of water, with 50 dead individuals. In contrast, the lowest mortality rate was recorded at a dose of 20 gram of material/500ml of water, with only 12 death S. litura larvae. In field testing, the best dose was 50 gram/14 liters of water, and it caused the death of 50 S. litura larvae. Spraying B. thuringiensis on rice plants can reduce the population and intensity of S. litura.

An increasing studies related with the detrimental effects of agrochemicals suggested the advantage of biofertilizers and biopesticides uses to support the sustainable farming system. This study aimed to evaluate the response of shallot 'Lembah Palu' with the application of arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) and Beauveria bassiana (Bb) under organic farming system. A split-plot experiment was designed to combine Bb at two intervals (every 5 and 10 days) and AM with three rates (0; 5; and 10 g per plant). Leafminer population and infestation, root colonization, root biomass, and shallot yield were observed. Application of the AM and Bb affected shallot production and leafminer infestation, independently. Mycorrhizae application increased the root biomass and yield of shallot but gave negligible effects on population and leafminer attack. The shallot production with no mycorrhizae was significantly lower compared to both mycorrhizae application rates of 5 g and 10 g. The application of B. bassiana every 5 days was more effective in suppressing the population and infestation of leafminers compared to that every 10 day-treatment. The study points out the positive contribution of the mycorrhizae and B. bassiana in the shallot cultivation and supports the implementation of the organic farming system.
