“…Smith (1984) has likewise reported that suicide is rare at Broadmoor, the English security hospital. The Atascadero figure is comparable to, though still lower than, recent reports on jail suicide (Hayes & Rowan, 1988), which put jail rates at a little over six times the national male rate, and considerably higher than accepted rates for prison studies, whose consensus has been that prison inmates kill themselves more infrequently than their outside world peers (Prout & Ross, 1988;Rieger, 1971; for an opposing view, see Haycock, 1991).…”

“…Although suicide rates in mental hospitals have been found to vary widely (Biesser and Blanchette, 1961), the suicide rate at Atascadero State Hospital appears to be no greater than that at most mental hospitals and less than many. The 90 per 100,000 rate is, however, higher than that of the 10.5 per 100,000 rate found by Reiger (1971) in federal prisons between 1950 and 1969, and higher than that of 42 per 100,000 found in male prisons in England between 1958 and 1971 (Topp, 1979). Suicide by patients on escape or leave status while difficult to determine appear to have been uncommon.…”

“…Psychopathy, as described by Hare (1998), emphasizes deficits in affective and interpersonal functioning. The pasts of psychopaths are often characterized by dysfunctional family structures, parental neglect and abuse, emotional deprivation, maternal separation, antisocial values and violent home life (Rieger, 1971;Beautrais, 2000;Bohus et al. 2000;Johnson et al, 2002;Craig et al, 2005).…”
