Substitution of Corn for Mesquite Pod Meal in Diets for Lambs

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate intake, digestibility, ingestive behaviour, and body weight variation in lambs fed mesquite pod meal (0, 30, 60 and 90%) in substitution of ground corn grains (as-fed basis) in pelleted diets. Twelve Santa Ines×Dorper lambs with average body weight of 25.0±1.8 kg were distributed through three 4×4 Latin Squares consisting of four periods and four treatments. Diets consisted of 30% alfalfa hay and 70% concentrate. The experimental period was 60 days, divided into 15-day periods. The… Show more

“…Creatinine concentrations in urine were estimated using commercial kits (Bioclin ® ). Each animal was considered to excrete 17.05 mg creatinine per kilogram of body weight (Pereira, ), and the volume of urine excreted daily was estimated based on the concentration of creatinine in the spot sample. Commercial kits (Bioclin ® ) were used to determine the concentrations of uric acid and urea in the urine.…”

“…References [ 6 , 7 ] show that the use of industrial byproducts requires special attention, mostly to what concerns stimulation of rumination function, for sources of alternative diet fiber deserve special attention, mainly because grounding may reduce particle size and, thus, can result in metabolic alterations. By consequence, although the 40% level of dehydrated brewery residue is a high percentage in grass silage, increasing reduced particles, thus, an increase was expected in consumption of dry matter, stimulated by higher rumen passage rate, but such fact was not observed, for the consumption showed quadratic behavior.…”

“…In such context, among the alternatives for yielding of industrial byproducts animal feeding shows great potential [ 4 6 ], since the increase in prices of vegetal supplementation used for animal feeding has aroused great interest by the yielding of nonconventional food. However, so that the correct use of such byproducts be performed, it is necessary to verify nutrition adequacy of such ingredients [ 2 , 7 ]. This is important, for the correct formulation of diets for animals goes beyond fulfilling nutrition needs, including the quality of final product and fulfilling the expectations of consumers.…”

“…In this context, Prosopis juliflora pod meal has been pointed out in several studies with ruminants [ 3 , 4 , 6 ] as a very useful feed alternative for the nutrition of sheep kept on pasture. The use of Prosopis juliflora meal can be justified by the chemical composition and acceptability for goats and sheep [ 7 ] in moderate amounts (from 100 to 400 g/kg DM).…”
