Subretinal Fibrovascular Proliferation in Retinal Arteritis with Multiple Aneurysmal Dilatations: A Case Report

Abstract: A 14-year-old boy with bilateral retinal arteritis with multiple aneurysmal dilatations complicated by secondary macular subretinal fibrovascular proliferation and epimacular membrane formation is described. This complication has not been previously reported in this rare disorder. Systemic steroid and immunosup-pressive therapy did not change the course of the disease. Improvement of macular edema and subretinal exudation was achieved following pars plana vitrecto-my, posterior hyaloid dissection and epiretina… Show more

“…Complications include low-grade vitritis, vitreous hemorrhage, rubeosis iridis, neovascular glaucoma, subretinal fibrosis, and retinal neovascularization caused by extensive areas of peripheral capillary nonperfusion. 3 Behçet disease and Susac syndrome should be included in the differential diagnosis; however, they lack multiple macroaneurysms, andthelatterischaracterized by multiple branch retinal artery occlusions and microangiopathy of the cochleaandbrain. Moreover, theseentitiesrespondtosystemicimmunosuppression, 4 whereasoralsteroidsandcytotoxic agents appear to have no effect on the course of BNMRAA. 2,5,6 This case demonstrates the importance of differentiating between BNMRAA and inflammatory disorders such as Behçet disease to avoid unnecessary treatment with immu-nosuppressive agents.…”
