One deep channel (Northearst Channel) provides a deepwater entrance to the basins of the Gulf of Maine and is thought to be a river valley carved before the Pleistocene and subsequently modified by glacial erosion (Torphy and Zeigler, 1957;Uchupi, 1966a). The shallow channels are thought to be relict fluvial Pleistocene drainageways formed during lower stands of sea level in glacial stages.…”
