Subconjunctival hibernoma in a dog

Abstract: A 10-year-old, castrated male, German Shepherd mixed-breed dog was presented to Kansas State University Veterinary Health Center for evaluation of a subconjunctival swelling in the ventral fornix of the left orbit. “…An additional reason for weaker immunoreactivity in this study compared to previous reports of canine hibernoma is that the UCP1 antibody was diluted to 1:100 in this study but was 5 times more concentrated in the other reports of canine hibernoma. 25,27 It is unknown in the present study if UCP1 expression by neoplastic cells represents transdifferentiation of white adipocytes to brown adipocytes, aberrant expression of UCP1 in white adipocytes, neoplastic transformation of beige adipocytes, or cross-reaction of the antibody against human UCP1 with a different canine protein.…”

“…Diagnosed both in humans and animals, they are localised in various parts of the body and are most frequently described as a lesion developing in mature individuals (Moretti et al 2010, Mavrogenis et al 2011, Stuckey et al 2013. Taking into account the appearance of the cells, character of stroma and presence in the sublayer of the spindle shaped cells, four…”
