Study on the properties of space charge and breakdown for epoxy–paper composites

Abstract: The properties of space charge and breakdown in epoxy/paper composites are studied in this paper. The results show that the breakdown voltage of the epoxy/paper composite is lower than that of the epoxy under AC voltage but is higher under DC voltage. In order to explain this phenomenon, the space charge behavior is investigated. In epoxy/paper composites, the space charges easily accumulate at the epoxy/paper interface at low fields, and the electric field distribution is highly deformed. However, the amount … Show more

“…In addition to EP-based composites with inorganic fillers, EIP composites have also been extensively employed in power supplying systems, [140,141,[152][153][154] in which the insulation paper is mainly responsible for the fix of Al foil used for graduating electric field during high-voltage operations. [140,155,156] For research convenience, particle-free epoxy resin samples have been widely used as a control group for comparison.…”

“…Compared to oil-paper insulated bushing, dry DC bushing has excellent mechanical properties and heat resistance, while avoiding secondary hazards such as explosion and fire caused by faults. In addition, it also has the advantages of light weight, flexible installation angle and environmental protection insulating material [2]. The capacitor core of a high-voltage dry DC bushing is made by alternately rolling a multilayered crepe paper and aluminum foil around the center conductor, vacuum-impregnating the paper with epoxy resin and applying a staged curing process [3].…”

“…The aging of insulation under high electric field intensity for a long time will accelerate, which seriously affects the safe and stable operation of the bushing. Wu Kai et al studied the space charge characteristics of RIP [2]. But no method for suppressing space charge is proposed.…”

“…Epoxy resins are widely used in power equipment and electronic devices because of their excellent adhesion, corrosion resistance, electrical insulation and ease of processing and forming ( Rimdusit and Ishida, 2000 ; Cao et al, 2015 ; Jin et al, 2015 ). However, as a thermosetting material, epoxy resin has a highly cross-linked internal structure, which leads to a high brittleness and is susceptible to fracture and insulation damage in high-stress situations, limiting its application scope ( Soares et al, 2011 ).…”
