Study on properties of cotton fabric incorporated with diammonium phosphate flame retardant through cyclodextrin and 1,2,3,4-butane tetracarboxylic acid binding system

Abstract: The chemical and physical structure of cyclodextrin makes it attractive for use in flame retardant finishing for improving the functional properties and durability of the finished fabric. The suitability of cyclodextrins for grafting using viable techniques that could be reproduced was studied. The flame retardant diammonium phosphate was applied on cyclodextrin-grafted cotton fabric and grafted cum bonded with 1,2,3,4-butane tetracarboxylic acid fabric. The modified monochlorotriazinyl-b-cyclodextrin gives mo… Show more

“…Kumar et al and Veerappagounder et al [67,68] prepared the monochlorotriazinyl-β-cyclodextrin (MBCD) by reacting BCD with cyanuric chloride. MBCD was then covalently grafted to cotton fabric with a high percentage of grafting (2.7%) (MBCD-gr-Cotton).…”

“…β-CD has a three-dimensional cavity that is hydrophilic in the external ring and hydrophobic in the internal ring. The chemical bond of β-CD has some flexibility at a certain extent and thus, it can act as a “host” molecule to accommodate different “guest”molecules in order to form a “host–guest” inclusion [11]. The “guest”molecules can be inorganic/organic compounds, organic/inorganic ions, benzene rings and non-polar hydrocarbon chains in the aliphatic compounds [12,13,14].…”

“…The final product was then tested for the inclusion of limonene, a multipurpose compound used as a flavor modifying agent. The functionalization of cotton fabric to obtain flame retardant properties has also been reported (Veerappagounder et al, 2016 ). For that purpose, the cotton fabric was modifed with natural CDs and MCT-β-CD, and using BTCA as crosslinker (see Scheme 1 ).…”

“…This compound confers retardant properties, but it also contributes to the aging of cellulose-based materials. It was observed, however, that the tretament of the MCT-CD-cotton with diammonium phsophate not only enhances the flame retardation but also the durability of the fabric, when compared to the unmodified cotton (Veerappagounder et al, 2016 ).…”
