Study of the influence of plasticizers on the thermal and mechanical properties of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) compounds

Abstract: The influence of four types of plasticizers, dioctyl phthalate (DOP), dioctyl adipate (DOA), triacetyl glycerol (TAG) and polyadipate (PA), in the thermal and mechanical properties of Poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), a highly crystalline biodegradable polyester, was evaluated in this work. The plasticizers were introduced alone or mixtures of them, using concentrations that varied from 5 to 30% wt. Their influence in some important polymer parameters as Tg, Tm and degree of crystallinity, and on its mechanical b… Show more

“…This ecological awareness impelled development of new, eco-friendly materials, especially for single-use plastic items. Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is an alternative because it has similar biodegradability characteristics to those of conventional thermoplastics (Baltieri et al, 2003). However, use of PHB is limited because of its thermal instability, excessive brittleness, and high production cost compared with synthetic plastics (El-Hadi et al, 2002).…”

“…DSC is the commonly used method for determination of chitosan's T g [49][50][51]. Herein, T g was determined by DSC in the second heating run to eliminate the influences of water and membrane processing [52,53]. The DSC trace of CS-25 membrane is presented in Fig.…”

“…Poly-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) is one the most widely studied PHAs [8,9]. The physical properties of PHB are often compared to those of isotactic polypropylene because they have similar melting points, degrees of crystallinity and glass transition temperatures [10,11].…”
