The paradox of the energy transition is that the low marginal costs of new renewable energy sources (RES) drag electricity prices down and discourage investments in flexible productions that are needed to compensate for the lack of dispatchability of the new RES. The energy transition thus discourages the investments that are required for its own harmonious expansion. To investigate how this paradox can be overcome, we argue that, under certain assumptions, future electricity prices are rather accurately modeled from the residual load obtained by subtracting non-flexible productions from the load. Armed with the resulting economic indicator, we investigate future revenues for European power plants with various degree of flexibility. We find that, if neither carbon taxes nor fuel prices change, flexible productions would be financially rewarded better and sooner if the energy transition proceeds faster but at more or less constant total production, i.e. by reducing the production of thermal power plants at the same rate as the RES production increases. Less flexible productions, on the other hand, would see their revenue grow more moderately. Our results indicate that a faster energy transition with a quicker withdrawal of thermal power plants would reward flexible productions faster.

Summary Affordable, clean, efficient, flexible, and reliable energy storage is an important component of sustainable energy systems. There are several studies in the literature concentrating on improving the sustainability performance of energy storage systems from economic and technical perspectives. However, a comprehensive performance investigation of energy storage systems that take economic, environmental, social, and technical criteria into account is still needed. For that reason, in the present study, it is aimed to perform a complete assessment and analysis of the sustainability of energy storage systems for residential applications in communities and cities. Pumped hydro, conventional batteries, high‐temperature batteries, flow batteries, and hydrogen are the selected energy storage systems. In order to handle the vagueness and ambiguity during the assessment and to eliminate the perceived hesitancy in the decision makers' preferences, an innovative method, a hybrid hesitant fuzzy multicriteria decision‐making (MCDM) methodology composed of hesitant fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (HFAHP) and hesitant fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (HFTOPSIS), is utilized to assess the sustainability of the selected systems. In this study, four different performance criteria: economic (power cost and energy cost), environmental (pollutant emissions, area requirement, wastewater quality, and solid waste production), social (safety, accessibility, ease of use, and public acceptance), and technical (efficiency, storage capacity, cycling limit, and performance degradation) are taken into consideration. The performance evaluation results indicate that technical performance has the highest influence and social performance has the lowest influence when evaluating the sustainability of the selected energy storage systems. And hydrogen has the highest sustainability performance compared with the other selected energy storage options.

EditorialDemand for electricity is increasing rapidly in Latin America. Expanding and enhancing the current power generation infrastructure is thus a major concern for the region. In that context, renewable energy is bound to play a relevant role in the coming years and hydroelectric energy especially so in view of its relatively unexploited potential, which is estimated in around 690,000 MW in the region.Our mission is to contribute to the regional integration by means of the production of knowledge in the field of hydroelectric power generation and hydromechanical systems, with focus on technological advance and the rise of quality standards, but with an eye on the priorities of a region where, well into the XXI century, millions of people find themselves deprived of electricity. That includes the topics such as the evaluation of the development of projects of low environmental impact, the role of hydroelectric powerplants in the face of the diversification of the energy matrix as well as mini-and small-hydro projects to meet the demand of areas with no access to the electrical network.Three symposia have been held and six editions of this Journal have been published since the creation of this, the Latin Group, in 2012. Added to that are postgraduate courses and exchange programs that are being organized at present. Mexico, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay and Argentina are the most active members of the Group and it is our goal to get more involved in the future.We firmly believe in the ability of our universities to conduct the research in the field of hydraulic turbomachinery and that this knowledge will have a beneficial impact on the policy making of our countries, whether on matters related to existing infrastructure as well as the development of longterm projects and strategies.We understand that keeping and strengthening the link between the nations currently participating is a major challenge in the framework of a constantly evolving reality, seen reflected in the availability of economic resources, the technological tools and the swings of institutional management.
