With at least 200 ethnic groups and 30.000 medicinal plants used in Jamu formulations, Indonesia is one of the largest natural drug dispensaries in the world. Ethnomedicine-directed bioprospecting has been used to accelerate drug discovery. Little is known about the coverage of ethnomedicinal studies in Indonesia. The quest to obtain drugs from plants also remains elusive. Nature-derived approved drugs worldwide have come mostly from drug-productive families that tend to be clustered in the phylogenetic tree, thus these families should be the basis of bioprospecting focus. We presented a review of ethnomedicinal research conducted across Indonesia and recommend strategic approaches to accelerate the translation of traditional knowledge into the clinic. We identified several plant species commonly used with similar or different purposes within different places, empirical pharmacological studies, regions that are understudied, and comparison with plants whose metabolites have been used for the development of approved medicine worldwide. Combination of ethnomedicinal knowledge with molecular phylogenetics,-omics, Bioactivity-guided bioprospecting, DNA barcoding, and Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) software will enable more efficient and environmentally friendly drug discovery process as well as commercial production. Altogether, this proposed method will be a game-changer in the exploration of the largely untapped chemical diversity of Indonesian flora.

Pada dasarnya masyarakat Indonesia telah menggunakan pengobatan penyakit kulit dengan cara modern seperti salep, namun dengan cara yang ada belum juga berhasil untuk sembuh. Bahkan membuat si penderita mengeluh dan depresi terhadap penyakit yang dideritanya, sehingga mereka berusaha mencari berbagai macam pengobatan alternatif yang lebih ilmiah dan sederhana seperti pengobatan dengan cara tradisional. Dalam pengobatannya dengan menggunakan tanaman yang berkhasiat obat terutama penyakit kulit dan jenis tanamannya belum banyak diteliti serta belum banyak dikenal oleh masyarakat. Tujuan dalam penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis tanaman tradisional yang berkhasiat untuk pengobatan penyakit kulit. Jenis penelitian ini mengunakan tipe deskriptif yang lokasi penelitiannya dilakukan di kelurahan Sasa, Jambula dan Kastela, Kota Ternate. Sampelnya adalah semua jenis tanaman yang berkhasiat untuk pengobatan penyakit kulit yang telah terinventarisasi. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan mengunakan sistem jelajah atau eksplorasi dengan analisis datanya dengan menggunakan data primer dan data sekunder. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian bahwa jenis tanaman yang berkhasiat untuk pengobatan penyakit kulit yang telah terinventarisasi dengan menggunakan tehnik jelajah yang ditemukan di kelurahan Sasa, Jambula, dan Kastela berjumlah 15 jenis tanaman dengan 11 famili yang dipakai dalam pengobatan penyakit kulit. Dari hasil wawancara bahwa cara pengolahan jenis tanaman tersebut ada yang ditumbuk, diiris-iris, dan dipotong-potong lalu dioleskan ke bagian yang sakit. West Kalimantan consists of 151 sub-ethnics. One of them is the Iban found in Lanjak Deras Village, Batang Lupar District, Kapuas Hulu Regency, Indonesia. The Iban has such a long history regarding their insiht into traditional medicine to deal with health problems experienced by local people. However, their knowledge of traditional medication has not been well documented. Therefore, knowledge of traditional medication is considered very important to be documented as an effort to preserve cultural heritage. This study aimed to analyze the source of traditional medication knowledge in the Iban. The method used in this study was survey techniques. The data were obtained through semi-structured interviews. Descriptive qualitative was used to analyze the data. The result showed that the sources of the Ibans knowledge for traditional medication were derived from: family (100%), customary leader (100%), shaman (100%), experience (75%), experiment (75%), dreams (50%), verbally (100%), be informed (100%) and ask a question (100%). This shows that the dayak Iban tribe people get traditional medical knowledge from various sources.Keywords: Analysis, traditional medicine, plants medicine, dayak iban
