IoT networks are increasingly being connected to a wide range of devices, and the number of devices connected has significantly increased in recent years. As a consequence, the number of vulnerabilities to IoT networks has also been increasing tremendously. In IoT networks, botnet‐based Distributed Denial of Service attack is challenging due to its dynamic behavior. The sensors and actuators connected to IoT networks are low‐powered and have less memory. Because of their inherent vulnerability, IoT devices can always be compromised by an attacker and be used to form a large botnet. A detailed analysis of IoT botnet attacks is presented in this article, along with statistics and the architectures of the botnet. We also survey the existing literature on IoT botnet traffic analysis and present a taxonomy of attack detection methods. We particularly focus on deep learning‐based methods and conduct a comparative study to evaluate their performance on IoT traffic analysis. We identify the current issues and research challenges in this field, and we conclude by highlighting some future research directions.

A Modern Approach towards an Industry 4.0 Model: From Driving Technologies to Management

Every so often, a confluence of novel technologies emerges that radically transforms every aspect of the industry, the global economy, and finally, the way we live. These sharp leaps of human ingenuity are known as industrial revolutions, and we are currently in the midst of the fourth such revolution, coined Industry 4.0 by the World Economic Forum. Building on their guideline set of technologies that encompass Industry 4.0, we present a full set of pillar technologies on which Industry 4.0 project portfolio management rests as well as the foundation technologies that support these pillars. A complete model of an Industry 4.0 factory which relies on these pillar technologies is presented. The full set of pillars encompasses cyberphysical systems and Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and big data, robots and drones, cloud computing, 5G and 6G networks, 3D printing, virtual and augmented reality, and blockchain technology. These technologies are based on a set of foundation technologies which include advances in computing, nanotechnology, biotechnology, materials, energy, and finally cube satellites. We illustrate the confluence of all these technologies in a single model factory. This new factory model succinctly demonstrates the advancements in manufacturing introduced by these modern technologies, which qualifies this as a seminal industrial revolutionary event in human history.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an extensive network of heterogeneous devices that provides an array of innovative applications and services. IoT networks enable the integration of data and services to seamlessly interconnect the cyber and physical systems. However, the heterogeneity of devices, underlying technologies and lack of standardization pose critical challenges in this domain. On account of these challenges, this research article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the enabling technologies and standards that build up the IoT technology stack. First, a layered architecture approach is presented where the state-of-the-art research and open challenges are discussed at every layer. Next, this research article focuses on the role of middleware platforms in IoT application development and integration. Furthermore, this article addresses the open challenges and provides comprehensive steps towards IoT stack optimization. Finally, the interfacing of Fog/Edge Networks to IoT technology stack is thoroughly investigated by discussing the current research and open challenges in this domain. The main scope of this study is to provide a comprehensive review into IoT technology (the horizontal fabric), the associated middleware and networks required to build future proof applications (the vertical markets).
