“…Differences in breed susceptibility to both infection and disease have been commonly observed. The N'Dama cattle, indigenous to the tsetse-fly-infested regions of West and Central Africa, have been found rarely to develop either a readily demonstrable parasitaemia or disease [51,53]. It was observed that although the pure N'Dama were resistant, N'Dama Zebu crosses and pure Zebu developed high parasitaemia and disease terminating in death [51].…”

“…It was observed that although the pure N'Dama were resistant, N'Dama Zebu crosses and pure Zebu developed high parasitaemia and disease terminating in death [51]. It was postulated that once animals have been infected with T. vivas or T. congolcnse and then recovered, subsequent infections resulted in low parasitaemia and little evidence of disease [53].…”

“…Variation in susceptibility to trypanosomosis exists among N'Dama and West African Shorthorn (Stewart 1951;Chandler 1958;Murray et al 1981), and among Orma Boran and Maasai Zebu Ismael et al 1985;Mwangi et al 1998a). Recent studies suggest that there exists variation in susceptibility to trypanosomosis among Ethiopian cattle breeds, with the Sheko breed being significantly less susceptible than Abigar, Horro and Gurage (Lemecha et al 2006).…”

“…Although various modifications of the lytic test have been used by other workers (Lourie & O'Connor, 1936;Chandler, 1958;Lumsden, 1967;Clarkson & Awan, 1969b), the details of the test have not previously been described adequately. The advantage of the test outlined in the present paper lies in its simplicity.…”

“…Most of the reported work on this species has been carried out on the rodent-adapted strain (Desowitz & Watson, 1951, 1953. Thus Chandler (1958) used a lyric test to detect antibodies against T. vivax in the sera of N'dama cattle, and Gray (1960Gray ( , 1961) was able to demonstrate the presence of precipitins in cattle sera by gel-diffusion. Weitz (1963a, b) using the preciptin test, the mouse protection test, and the direct immunofluorescence test showed that T. vivax and T. brucei had 'bound antigens' in common, while the soluble 'exo-antigens' of these trypanosomes were species-specific.…”
