“…These results demonstrate that the outer hair cells are specific targets of the aminoglycoside antibiotic. Current experiments with chronic treatment with gentamicin alone (Hayashida, 1986), as well as in vitro studies on isolated outer hair cells (Dulon, 1987), are in agreement with these observations. Ethacrynic acid has been shown to facilitate the entry of gentamicin into the endolymph (Tran Ba Huy et al 1983), and the present study suggests that it facilitates the entry of gentamicin into the hair cells.…”
