S Background: The perceived competence of newly graduated doctors who had undergone clinical practice in their first year could give insight into curriculum accomplishment. Objective: This study aimed to understand alums' perceptions of their performance in tropical infection cases. Methods: Alums who have finished their internship and have been practicing as doctors for less than a year were respondents to this study. We purposefully selected eight respondents based on gender, workplace, and work location. We conducted in-depth interviews by phone. The interview was recorded, and the conversation was transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis is carried out on transcription by coding and categories. Results: The interview results obtained two significant themes: the perception of competence related to tropical medicine cases and the perception of curriculum implementation. Cases and types of skills influenced perceptions of competence. Respondents perceived curriculum implementation as insufficient and influenced by case exposure, learning methods, and the national final exam. Conclusion: Providing varied cases, improving feedback from clinical supervisors, and initiating early clinical experience are necessary to improve tropical infection competencies. Keywords: perception, medical student, tropical infection ABSTRAK Latar belakang: Persepsi kompetensi alumni yang baru bekerja dapat memberikan informasi mengenai capaian kurikulum. Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan mendapatkan gambaran mengenai persepsi alumni terhadap kompetensinya dalam menghadapi kasus infeksi tropis. Metode: Alumni yang sudah selesai menjalani internship dan telah berpraktek sebagai dokter kurang dari setahun menjadi responden dalam penelitian ini. Terdapat delapan responden yang dipilih dengan teknik purposive sampling, berdasarkan jenis kelamin, tempat kerja, dan lokasi kerja. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara mendalam menggunakan panggilan telepon. Hasil wawancara direkam dan ditranskripsi secara verbatim.Analisis tematik dilakukan terhadap transkripsi dengan cara membuat koding dan kategori. Hasil: Hasil wawancara didapatkan dua tema besar yaitu persepsi kompetensi terkait kasus infeksi tropis dan persepsi mengenai implementasi kurikulum. Kasus dan jenis ketrampilan mempengaruhi persepsi mengenai kompetensi. Responden mempersepsikan implementasi kurikulum infeksi tropis masih kurang mencukupi. Persepsi ini dipengaruhi oleh paparan kasus, metode belajar, dan ujian kompetensi dokter. Kesimpulan: Perbaikan metode pengajaran, memperbanyak kasus, serta umpan balik dari supervisor perlu untuk meningkatkan performa kompetensi kedokteran tropis. Background: The implementation of the national licensing examination for medical doctors is expected to have a broad impact on doctors and society. Indonesian Medical Doctor National Competency Examination (IMDNCE; Indonesian: Uji Kompetensi Mahasiswa Program Profesi Dokter or UKMPPD) as an ‘exit exam’ in the medical education process may significantly impact learning and clinical practices. The study’s objective was to explore the impact of IMDNCE on both the learning and clinical practices of doctors.Methods: The study subjects were internship doctors who had passed the IMDNCE. Participants were recruited by purposive sampling based on the ownership status of the institution (state/private) and the accreditation of respective medical schools and participants’ gender. The study participants consisted of 41 internship doctors working in 6 regions from 33 different medical schools out of 75 medical faculties in Indonesia.Results: IMDNCE has a positive influence on learning and clinical practice. The IMDNCE process emphasizes standard competencies that must be mastered and patient management process with current evidence that is not always achieved during clinical education, increasing clinical knowledge and skills, and increasing awareness of professional development. IMDNCE also has very well affected in the development of self-confidence and a sense of responsibility which are essential in clinical practice. In addition to psychological influences, IMDNCE improves competence in clinical skills and promotes good medical practice.

Indonesia has applied for a national competency exit examination for medical graduates since 2014. This examination has an impact on students. There is limited literature that describes the impact mechanism of the national examination. This study aimed to identify the determinant factors of the learning behavior of medical students in the national medical competency examination during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. This qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured in-depth face-to-face interviews with 13 medical students from the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Islam Malang and online interviews with 13 medical students from the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. Theoretical sampling was carried out by including three medical students from a faculty of medicine in east Indonesia. Semi-structured in-depth interviews with respondents from FK Unisma were conducted offline with strict health protocols. Meanwhile, communications with respondents from FK-KMK UGM and the eastern Indonesia medical faculty were conducted online by telephone or through Zoom meetings. Transcribed interviews were coded openly. Themes were finalized through discussion to reach a consensus. The extracted concepts from our study were classified into 10 categories that describe the determinant factors of learning behavior and two categories of learning behavior. These categories include task value, goal orientation, weakness, impact failure, benefits of passing the examination, self-efficacy, beliefs, barriers to learning, environment factors, and test anxiety. The learning behavior itself consists of two categories: quality of learning and regulation of learning. The conclusion is determinant factors consisting of internal and external factors. Internal factors include task value, goal orientation, weakness, benefits of passing the examination, self-efficacy, belief, and test anxiety. The external factor includes the environmental factor. These factors determine the medical student learning behavior in the national medical competency examination during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia, both in quality and regulation of learning. The impact of failure only determines the regulation of learning, while the barrier to learn only determines the quality of learning.
