Student‐Run Health Clinic: Novel Arena to Educate Medical Students on Systems‐Based Practice

Abstract: In recent decades, the United States has experienced substantial growth in the number of student-run clinics for the indigent. Today, over 49 medical schools across the country operate over 110 studentrun outreach clinics that provide primary care services to the poor and uninsured. Despite this development, little research has been published on the educational value of such student-led endeavors. Although much has been surmised, no general methodology for categorizing the learning experience in these clinics … Show more

“…Existing literature on the value of SRCs is limited and only six studies were included in the review (34,35,36,37,38,39). The one previous review that has considered the effectiveness of SRC found limited quality evidence and concluded in 2009 that SRCs are still evolving as incubators for enriching the educational knowledge of students and for meeting the needs of disadvantaged groups (27). Although this review has updated the quantity of research evidence, the quality of this evidence remains poor.…”

“…The underserved populations seen at SVFCs and the students who care for them could truly benefit from the continuity of patient care, supervision, and systems that an ECMH provides. As the number of student-run clinics has increased over the past decades, they have been seen as an important supplement to an overburdened system of safety net health care [23]. However, the volunteer-based model on which these clinics are structured can affect the level of oversight [23,24] and the quality of preventive care delivered [25].…”

However, the volunteer-based model on which these clinics are structured can affect the level of oversight [23,24] and the quality of preventive care delivered [25]. Our study demonstrates that an ECMH-modeled longitudinal clerkship could be a way to enhance the quality of health care for vulnerable populations and learners’ education concurrently.…”

“…While volunteers provide many services that free clinics offer, there are few studies on volunteers' experiences in this environment. The majority of studies on volunteering at free clinics have been conducted at student-run free clinics and focused on the impact of free clinic volunteer experiences on Volunteer Experiences at a Free Clinic in the United States: A Qualitative Study medical or health profession education [5,6]. More information about volunteering at free clinics, especially at non-student-run free clinics, is needed in order to better understand the types of experiences free clinic volunteers have, how they are utilized by these clinics, and how free clinics can better train and equip their volunteers to improve patient outcomes.…”
