Structure of zinc and niobium tellurite glasses by neutron and x-ray diffraction

Abstract: Neutron and x-ray diffraction experiments of high resolving power with neutrons from a spallation source and high-energy photons from a synchrotron have been performed on compositional series of binary Zn, Nb and on mixed Zn/Nb tellurite glasses. The Te-O, Zn-O and Nb-O coordination numbers are determined by Gaussian fitting of the first-neighbour peaks in the neutron and x-ray data simultaneously. The transition of TeO 4 to TeO 3 units with increasing fraction of a second component is indicated by decreasing … Show more

“…If ZnO as a second oxide is added to TeO 2 networks formed from the corner-connected TeO 4 units, the modification process start with rupture of Te-O-Te bridges and change of the two participating TeO 4 to TeO 3 units, each of latter having two NBOs. Among the samples studied by Hoppe et al [11] , only that with 22 mol% ZnO shows this behavior. Further increasing the modifier content stabilizes TeO 4 units with non-bridging oxygen (NBO).…”

“…Consequently, the NBO bonds have higher polarizability and cation refractions. An addition in either electron density or polarizability of the ions will cause an increase in the refractive index (n) of materials [11] . “…A decrease in longitudinal and shear velocities is observed as evident. Figure 3 shows the variation of elastic moduli of silver borotellurite with Ag2O content and Table 1 [15]. Addition of Ag 2 O causes discontinuity of glass structure and hence, a decrease in rigidity and velocity.…”
