Abstract: There are three major classes of the enzyme Glutamine Synthetase (GS), denoted as GSI, GSII and GSIII in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, that share widely conserved active-site residues but vary in average protein length, oligomeric assembly state and cofactor requirements.
