Abstract: After a short review of methods for the determination of the biomass concentration in fermentation broths the construction and working principle of a newly developed retroreflective photometer are described. The main advantages of the instrument are a wide range from 0.1 to 200 g biomass/l the sterilizability, the self‐cleaning of the cuvette‐window, a favourable design and a little maintenance.
