Women’s ‘inner‐balance’: a comparison of stressors, personality traits and health problems by age groups

“…With these multiple roles, middle‐aged women reported more stressors related to managing home responsibilities, running errands/commuting children, not receiving adequate help or emotional support from their partner, and not finding time to relax. Similar major stressors among middle‐aged women have been reported in other studies ( Walters 1993, Thomas 1995, Woods & Mitchell 1997). According to Thomas (1997), women are more concerned about the quality of, and maintaining, their marriage than their spouses, and they carry a greater burden of childcare and household responsibilities.…”

Women's experiences of treatment of depression: Medicalization or empowerment?

“…Similar to findings of other qualitative studies on women’s health-related experiences (e.g., Popay, 1992; Walters, 1993), the women interviewed in the present study had tended to normalize their feelings of ill health in the period prior to their diagnosis with depression. They had tried to hide their depressive experiences from others, carrying on as usual with their daily activities.…”

“…(Tracy) In describing their experiences in the period before being diagnosed, the women’s accounts also reflected attempts to normalize their ill feelings. Similar to Walters’ (1993) findings, the women in the present study initially had discounted their feelings of ill health and distress as not being a cause for concern. The women described how they had tried to ignore their ill feelings and to carry on with their daily activities.…”
