Storm water detention tanks are widely used for the control of combined sewer overflows.Conventional continuous simulation and recently developed analytical probabilistic models have been used for analyzing the hydrologic operation of storm water detention tanks. These analyses are necessary in order to accurately estimate the runoff capture efficiency of a given control system or the required storage capacity for achieving a desired runoff capture efficiency. The analytical probabilistic models still have the shortcomings of making simplifying assumptions about the initial storage conditions of a detention tank. Developed in this study is a new stochastic analysis method which can provide similar results as provided by continuous simulations and overcome some of the shortcomings of the previously developed analytical probabilistic models. This stochastic analysis method uses closed-form analytical equations to estimate the runoff capture efficiency and required storage capacity. Results from these analytical equations are validated by comparing with continuous simulation results and close agreements are observed. These analytical equations are therefore proposed as a computationally efficient alternative for analyzing the hydrologic performance of combined sewer overflow tanks.Plain Language Summary Storm water detention tanks are widely used for the control of combined sewer overflows. Continuous simulations are time consuming to perform and require a large amount of input data. Analytical probabilistic models still have the shortcoming of making simplifying assumptions about the initial storage conditions of a detention tank. A new analytical stochastic model is developed in this study which eliminates the shortcomings of both the continuous simulation and analytical probabilistic approaches. The new analytical stochastic model uses closed-form equations to directly estimate the system performance statistics. It can thus be used as a convenient tool for the planning, design, and operation of combined sewer overflow tanks.Storm water detention tanks primarily serve two purposes in the control of CSOs (Andr es-Dom enech et al., 2010). First, with the proper configuration of the tank size and its discharge capacity, the frequency and severity of CSOs can be greatly reduced. Second, storm tanks allow for the sedimentation and selfpurification of stored inflow, and therefore aid in mitigating water pollution from outflows.

Short duration intense rainfall causes an increase in rainfall derived infiltration and inflow (RDII) into aging sewer networks, which leads to Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs). This study presents a generalised framework for assessing and mitigating the impacts of intense rainfall on sanitary sewer networks. The first part of the proposed framework involves a detailed hydraulic modelling to evaluate the performance of the sewer network. The second part deals with the development of SSO mitigation strategies based on Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) approaches. This paper also demonstrates the application of the first part of the proposed framework for a case study catchment in Melbourne, Australia. The hydraulic performance of the case study sewer network during a wet and a dry year is presented. The analysis found that for the wet year, 11 manholes had sewer overflows, whereas 53 of 57 manholes in the network of 3.2 km had surcharges. Such a study will benefit the water authorities to develop mitigation strategies for controlling SSOs in their sewer systems.

El tradicional concepto de ciclo del agua urbana, que incorpora de un modo muy lineal los servicios de abastecimiento y saneamiento, debe ser sustituido por una visión más integral y sistémica, donde el agua se vincula con el planeamiento y el desarrollo urbano y con las políticas de sostenibilidad. Se puede hablar de sistema de agua urbana. Esta globalidad de acción no es algo de lo que podamos sustraernos, ya que la legislación cada vez más orienta a las administraciones a considerar aspectos sistémicos y ambientales a la hora de gestionar, por ejemplo, los sistemas de saneamiento y drenaje. La plasmación práctica de todo este conglomerado de interacciones ya toma forma en algunos países, en los que se comienza a hablar de "Low Impact Development" (LID) o "Water Sensitivity Urban Design" (WSUD). Se propone integrar este nuevo enfoque estratégico bajo la denominación: Desarrollo Urbano Sensible al Agua (DUSA). Con el impulso del enfoque DUSA, los actuales sistemas de agua urbana (concebidos originalmente bajo el concepto tradicional de ciclo de agua urbana) pueden transformarse, conceptual y físicamente, para una gestión integrada del sistema del agua urbana en los nuevos modelos de desarrollo urbanos sostenible.
