“…Alcohol has been shown to modulate Na + /K + pumping in preparations from rodent brains (Foley and Rhoads, 1994; Ledig et al, 1985; Syapin et al, 1985). It would be interesting to investigate if alcohol inhibits Na + /K + pumping in cerebellar Purkinje neurons, and whether this is a factor in the motor dysfunction concordant with inebriation.…”

“…This pattern of acute inhibition of the enzyme with an apparently compensatory increase in activity during chronic alcohol exposure can be modeled in cultured cells (Rabin 1988; Rabin and Acara 1993) but was not observed in all animal models studied (Goldstein and Israel 1972;Akera et al 1973;Rangaraj and Kalant 1984;Leventhal and Tabakoff 1980;Aloia et al 1985;Nhamburo et al 1987;Foster et al 1989;Bertoni and Sprenkle 1994). Results appear to be sensitive to animal strain and route and duration of alcohol exposure (discussed in Rabin 1988;Chen et al 1997), but also to the in vitro conditions used in preparing the membranes (Swann 1990;Foley and Rhoads 1994) and assaying Na,KATPase activity (Israel et al 1970;Foster et al 1989). This is underscored by the observation that ethanol in vitro may stimulate or inhibit Na,KATPase depending on the ionic environment (Foster et al 1989).…”

“…1). Activities of the isozymes were based on the differential sensitivity of the enzyme to ouabain (Brodsky 1990;Brodsky and Guidotti 1990) as described previously (Foley and Rhoads 1994;Wang et al 1998). Because of their greater sensitivity to inhibition by ouabain, the combined activities of the a2 and a3 isozymes (a2/3) were operationally defined as the difference between ATP hydrolysis in the absence of ouabain and in the presence of 10 lM ouabain.…”
