Sterile neutrinos in astrophysical neutrino flavor

Abstract: In this paper, we study the effect of active-neutrino-sterile-neutrino mixing in the expected highenergy astrophysical neutrino flavor content. Non-unitarity in the measurement of the three-active neutrinos can be due to the existence of sterile neutrino states. We introduce the concept of the four-flavor tetrahedron in order to visualize the lack of unitarity in the astrophysical neutrino threeflavor triangle. We demonstrate that active-sterile neutrino mixings modify the allowed region of the astrophysical f… Show more

“…The initial energy distribution of the astrophysical neutrino flux should not be affected by the presence of a sterile neutrino, but the normalization of each flavor component is affected; see Refs. [203,204] for a detailed discussion. Thus, in this analysis, the energy spectrum of astrophysical neutrinos is defined by the added ν μ and antineutrino components normalizations, Φ astro , at 100 TeV and the change in the astrophysical spectral index, Δγ astro , relative to a central value of γ astro ¼ −2.5, namely…”

“…Given the present energy resolution of astrophysical neutrinos and the expected ratio of baseline to energy, neutrino oscillations will be averaged out. In this regime, the expected flavor composition of astrophysical neutrinos in the presence of a light sterile neutrino can be computed using the following equation [74]…”

“…Ref. [74] studied the effect of light sterile neutrinos in an LSND-MiniBooNE-agnostic scenario. In this analysis, the light sterile neutrino mixing parameters were allowed to vary within constraints on the unitarity of the PMNS matrix reported in [83].…”
