This paper investigates the voltage and reactive power control problem in low voltage grids with connected prosumers and bulk loads. The X(U) local control, which maintains the voltage at the feeders’ ends within a predefined band, and its combination with Q-Autarkic customer plants are the most effective and reliable strategies in grids with high prosumer share. However, these strategies may need adaptations to guarantee voltage limit compliance when bulk loads, such as electric vehicle parking garages and community-owned photovoltaic systems, are connected to the low voltage feeders. This paper extends the X(U) local control concept to involve bulk loads in Volt/var control and investigates the resulting load flows in different real low voltage grids. The results show that the extended control arrangement reliably removes all voltage limit violations by deteriorating the effectiveness of the original X(U) local control arrangement: reactive power flows and equipment loading within the low voltage grids are increased.

To achieve the goals of emission peak and carbon neutrality, significant effort is invested to accelerate the energy transition, with a focus on the development and utilization of renewable energy, as well as the upgrading of conventional units. Within this context, this paper proposes an innovative concept, known as the integrated energy production unit (IEPU), providing a variety of energy products and flexible adjustment functions for power systems with high penetration of non-hydro renewable energy. In the IEPU framework, a photovoltaic (PV) power plant is installed to produce electricity; CO2 capture technology is applied to the existing coal-fired power plant with biomass co-combustion. The generated CO2 is used to synthesize methane or methanol with hydrogen through electrolysis. First, the operational principle and advantages of this concept are illustrated. Then, a simplified model is built to provide an optimal configuration scheme of equipment capacity. Finally, the potential contribution of IEPU to the operational flexibility of the power system is also analyzed.

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.-Leonardo da Vinci IntroductionPhysically, the voltage is a local quantity that differs in each node of the electricity grid, as it varies along with the power transfer and the characteristics of the grid. Due to their strong coupling, the reactive power has always been used to control the voltage in transmission grids, originating the term Volt/varprocess. Reactive power is produced and consumed by diverse appliances distributed throughout the power system and operated by different stakeholders, making Volt/var control an extremely complex issue by its very nature. The overall control strategy should be designed with special care to reduce the complexity of the resulting Volt/var chain to facilitate the management.Volt/var management is one of the most fundamental power system processes that enables the reliable and efficient operation of the electricity grids. It is used to ensure compliance to voltage limits and to keep the power factor close to one. Both the elimination of voltage limit violations and the minimisation of the reactive power flows extend the active power transfer capability of the grid. In other words, an appropriate Volt/var control increases the utilisation of the electrical infrastructure, thus lowering the need for grid reinforcement.The massive connection of renewable and distributed generation and the electrification of other sectors gave rise to new challenges and opportunities that call for an adaption of the traditional Volt/var control schemes. Deteriorated power quality and uncontrolled interactions between the systems operated by different stakeholders are recognised as the main problems to be solved by future smart grids [66].
