Farmers own and run Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), a rapidly growing companies in India that was established under the section 465(1) of the Companies Act, 2013. Agriculture continues to be the backbone of the Indian economy, employing 42% of the labour force and contributing 20% of the country’s GDP. 86.6% of India’s small and marginal farmers depend on farming as their main source of income. Small and marginal farmers, in particular, play a significant role as shareholders in FPCs, which bring people together from all walks of life to learn more about the issue’s existence at the local level and help solve it. The FPC is the best institutional structure for addressing a range of agricultural issues, including marketing, financing (forward linkages), input, technology (backward linkages), compact technology for small lands, proper marketing linkage, capacity building, training program on value-added products, financial inclusion program, village storage facilities, timely crop insurance, agriculture extension services, and the benefits of informatics. In order to increase income and subsequently promote more equitable growth, the study investigates how FPC addresses local food and nutrition security, the development of climate-resilient agriculture systems, input shortages, unemployment, and the integration of small and marginal farmers into agricultural markets.

Farmer producer organizations are realized as a beneficial structural mechanism for assembling farmers’ collective assist motion geared toward enhancing their very own monetary and social state of affairs and that in their communities. Such organizations have been given the impression to have the capacity to create assets from their associates. They could work at incomparable ranges from the nearby to the worldwide. Many government organizations and NGOs have been seeking to make farmers into specific groups and combine them into the improvement procedure through actively involving them in switch of generation, manufacturing and marketing, making plans, enforcing and tracking of various tasks on rural improvement, agriculture and allied quarter improvement, herbal resource management etc. For building a sustainable FPO, congenial ecosystem is desirable, besides policy reforms predominantly in the system of agricultural marketing. Some of the good ecosystems include the contract farming, production, agri-logistics, policy environment, market and price risk mitigation, licensing, infrastructure arrangements, compliances, etc. FPOs have become one of the effective pathway to address constraints of agriculture sector. There is a necessity for identifying the suitable support system with proper technical guidance with workable and scalable business models. Mainly identified clusters to be scaled up in producer company requirements to be economically reinforced right from the period of community mobilization and inception.

Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) have emerged as a solution to the problems that small and marginal farmers confront with. This study probed into the reasons for the farmer-producer companies’ establishment, as stated in different policy documents and past literature. Performance of Farmers Producer Companies has improved significantly; however, the emergence of FPCs in India has not been consistent across the states. This paper examines the current status, geographical spread and functions of Farmer's Producer Companies (FPCs) across India, as well as suggests suitable measure to their performance. The study indicated that a total of 6471 FPCs were formed, in which around 80 per cent i.e. 5145 FPCs were promoted by Small Farmers Agri-business Consortium (SFAC) and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), 1263 FPCs were promoted by various state government and other agencies, and 63 of them were self-promoted. More than 50 per cent of the FPCs are set up in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Karnataka, Odisha and Telangana. SFAC promoted large number of FPCs in Madhya Pradesh (149 FPCs) and NABARD has promoted large number of FPCs in Uttarakhand (362). The number of farmers mobilised through FPCs by SFAC and NABARD were highest in the state of Madhya Pradesh with 183517 farmer members, followed by Karnataka with 176732 farmer members. There were a number of factors that influenced state performance, and this study suggested some strategies to overcome them in order to promote the growth of FPCs in India.
