Stature Estimation from Footprint: A Study on Central Indian Population

Abstract: Introduction: Personal identification is preliminary concern of medico-legal and forensic investigation. There are various methods including Anthropometry, Fingerprints, foot imprint, bite mark, lip print, ear print by the help of which personal identification can be performed. In India, the bare foot imprints are frequently recovered at the crime scene and stature of a person can be estimated using foot imprint method, so analysis of bare foot imprints are often a necessity for forensic investigation. “…These findings further validate the observation by Hossain et al (2010) that higher values in anthropometric dimensions are obtainable in negroid populations. While these differences could be explained in part by population-specific genetic variation, varying morphological features such as foot sizes would likely depend upon geographical distribution and primary racial characteristics (Shukla et al 2017). These inter-populational differences in anthropometric dimensions necessitate the establishment of population-specific algorithms for stature prediction from foot dimensions.…”

“…This has been attributed to a number of causative variables including climate, heredity, nutrition, lifestyle, and occupation. This observation necessitates population-specific stature prediction models from various anthropometric dimensions to be determined across the regional or ethnic divides (Shukla et al 2017).…”

“…However, inter-populational differences in anthropometric characteristics, which include stature and foot dimensions relative to shoe size, have been reported to exist due to geographical distribution, genetic variation and primary racial traits. This necessitates the establishment of population specific stature prediction models in different climes [19]. Apart from giving idea about barefoot morphology and individualistic characteristics, shoe prints are toid process, the subject was instructed to take and hold a deep breath.…”
