“…This may be particularly interesting to the local authorities, as some of these oscillations are observed in large harbours, prone to heavy ship and cargo traffic (Wang et al, 1987;de Jong and Battjes, 2004;Vilibić and Mihanović, 2005). For instance, Wang et al (1987) studied 23-yr-long sea level time series in the Bohai Bay (China) and documented statistics of all identified strong seiche events, enabling an estimation of seiche return periods. Applying this procedure to all stations along the US coastline (and not only there) would allow a delimitation of "high risk" areas.…”

“…No other such sites exists in China. Wang et al (1987) examined 23 years of continuous tide gauge records (1957-1958 and 1961-1981) and selected 137 events when maximum troughto-crest wave heights were greater than 40 cm. Most of these events were found to occur in May-August, while in winter months (January-February) strong seiches were never observed.…”

“…The mean duration of the events is from 2 to 4 h (maximum observed duration was 9 h) but the observed periods are not as consistent as in Nagasaki Bay where the most common periods are 85 and 115 min. Over the 23-year observational period, there were 13 events with maximum wave heights more than 100 cm, with the strongest event occurring on 1 September 1980 when the recorded seiche wave height was 293 cm (Wang et al, 1987;see also Fig. 1b in Rabinovich and Monserrat, 1996).…”

“…Nevertheless, little attention was paid to this phenomenon by specialists in natural hazards till the middle of the 1990s. Usually, it was considered to be a very local effect occurring in a few particular bays or harbours: Nagasaki Bay in Japan (Hibiya and Kajiura 1982;Akamatsu 1982), Ciutadella Harbour in Menorca Island, Balearic Islands, Spain (Tintoré et al 1988;Monserrat et al 1991;Gomis et al 1993), Longkou Harbour in China (Wang et al 1987), Vela Luka and some other bays in Croatia (Hodžić 1979(Hodžić /1980Orlić 1980) and Mazaro del Vallo harbour on the western coast of Sicily (Colucci and Michelato 1976;Candela et al 1999). The publications of Rabinovich andMonserrat (1996, 1998) attracted the interest of tsunami scientists to this type of oscillation.…”
