Staphylococcal strains involved in bovine mastitis are inhibited by Staphylococcus aureus antimicrobial peptides

Abstract: The inhibitory activity of five bacteriocin (Bac)-producer strains of Staphylococcus aureus was tested against bacteria pathogenic for cattle. Sixty-five epidemiologically unrelated strains of Staph. aureus involved in bovine mastitis were used as indicators in an agar diffusion test. Bacteriocins produced by four strains could inhibit only a limited number of test organisms. However, all 65 indicator strains proved to be susceptible to the combined action of both bacteriocins encoded by pRJ9, a Bac plasmid fo… Show more

“…Among Gram-negative bacteria tested only P. haemolytica was sensitive. C. fimi NCTC 7547, which is described as susceptible to all bacteriocins tested (Oliveira et al 1998), was sensitive for bacteriocin of strain 8 A as well. The bacteriocin was able to inhibit the growth of L. monocytogenes and C. perfringens, a very important property to food safety.…”

“…This bacteriocin is highly active against multidrug-resistant nosocomial staphylococcal strains, including the multidrug-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) clone endemic in most Brazilian hospitals and in other countries (25), Streptococcus agalactiae, and coagulase-positive staphylococcal strains involved in bovine mastitis, a disease of great economic impact (9,12). It can also inhibit Listeria monocytogenes, an important food-borne pathogen (11).…”

“…Aureocin A53 and its counterpart Aureocin A70, two peptides secreted by Staphylococcus aureus, have a bactericidal activity against lactic bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes (Oliveira et al, 1998a) and non related strains implicated in bovine mastitis (Oliveira et al, 1998b). In addition, Frenette and collaborators (1984) have isolated from a Staphylococcus haemolyticus strain a protein with an anti-gonococcal activity.…”
