Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome in an extremely low‐birth‐weight neonate: Molecular characterization and rapid detection by multiplex and real‐time PCR of methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract: ETB-positive ST91 MRSA, which was very similar to ST91 biCA-MRSA, was isolated from an ELBW infant with SSSS. The multiplex and real-time PCR assays specifically or quantitatively detected SSSS-associated and emerging pediatric MRSA.

“…Diagnosis of SSSS is based on histological and microbiology findings in collaboration with the overall clinical picture (Mueller, 2009) it has been associated with bullous impetigo in older children (Shi et al, 2011) and clinical symptoms can be similar to Steven Johnson syndrome, Kawasaki disease and Scarlet fever.…”

“…SSSS in newborns has been mainly reported in clonal complexes (CC) 121 and 15, carrying eta and/or etb genes [2], but also in other less common genotypes, such as ET B -positive ST91 MRSA and ET A -positive ST2993-t211 (CC8) with and without SCC mec V [11, 12]. …”
