Standards for Modified Osteoodontokeratoprosthesis (OOKP) Surgery According to Strampelli and Falcinelli

Abstract: This standard technique of modified OOKP surgery, where adequately performed, is capable of providing excellent anatomic and functional results even in the long term. In patients with corneal blindness untreatable by other approaches, we strongly recommend this technique for visual rehabilitation. Students of OOKP surgery should become familiar with the protocol described in this paper before subjecting the technique to further modifications.

“…The procedure by itself is a demanding and time consuming one, and takes up to 4-6 months towards completion of all stages. The results of the procedure are encouraging, especially given the good long-term retention of the prosthesis in these eyes [1,[7][8][9][10].…”

“…The OOKP procedure was initially performed according to Strampelli's first description [8], but several modifications in the surgery protocol were introduced during the study period [1,4,9]. The OKP procedure uses patient's tibial bone instead of tooth and is the same as that of OOKP, except for the step in which the keratoprosthesis is assembled [9,10].…”

“…Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP), first described by Strampelli [8] in 1963 and modified over the years by Falcinelli [3], is a keratoprosthesis that uses the patient's own canine tooth root and its surrounding alveolar bone as its haptic part to support an optical cylinder which is made of PMMA [4]. Since it is composed of the patient's own tissue, it has an excellent biointegration and has no immunological rejection.…”

“…The OOKP according to Benedetto Strampelli as modified by Falcinelli is the gold standard with respect to visual outcome and keratoprosthesis retention [26][27][28].…”
