Around the world, sexual prejudice is still a concerning attitude present in health care providers and institutions. Identification of sexual prejudice during medical training could be an initial strategy to improve health care assistance to this particular population. Despite significant knowledge in the area, almost all previous studies were based on samples from developed countries, and there are no studies evaluating sexual prejudice and its conditionings among Latin American medical students. Objectives of the study were to estimate prevalence and predictors of sexual prejudice among medical students from two large cities in Colombia. This research found that 22.9% of medical students had a high sexual prejudice. Males and individuals with high religiosity were associated with a higher sexual prejudice and may require more sensitization and education in the area. Medical training represents a very good opportunity to approach the problem and decrease sexual prejudice in future physicians.

Objetivo: determinar la aceptación de la adopción por hombres homosexuales en estudiantes de medicina de una universidad de Bogotá, Colombia. Método: se diseñó un estudio transversal en el que parti - ciparon estudiantes de medicina de primero a quinto semestre. Se preguntó “¿A las parejas de hombres homo - sexuales debería permitírsele adoptar hijos como a las parejas heterosexuales?” y se dieron cinco opciones de respuesta desde “muy en desacuerdo” que recibió un punto, hasta “muy de acuerdo” a la que asignaron cinco puntos. Se exploraron asociaciones con el coeficiente de correlación de Pearson ( r ) y Spearman ( r s ). Resultados: un total de 199 estudiantes participó en el estudio. El 4,0% respondió “muy de acuerdo” a la pregunta. En forma cuantitativa, la respuesta fue inde - pendiente de la edad ( r =0,09; r s =0,08), sexo (p=0,662), semestre ( r =-0,06; r s =0,10), estrato socioeconómico ( r =-0,03 r s =0,02) y actitud frente el cristianismo ( r =0,00; r s =0,01). No obstante, la respuesta se corre - lacionó significativamente con las puntuaciones para homofobia ( r =0,50; r s = 0, 51). Conclusiones: un reducido porcentaje de estudiantes de medicina está “muy de acuerdo” con la pregunta: “¿A las parejas de hombres homosexuales debería permi - tírsele adoptar hijos como a las parejas heterosexuales?”. La respuesta se correlaciona significativamente con la actitud hacia personas homosexuales y es independiente de la edad, sexo, semestre, estrato socioeconómico y actitud frente al cristianismo. Se necesita más investiga - ción en este ámbito.

This study examines the psychometric properties of a modified short form of the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity. While the original seven-item short form contained two negatively voiced items, this modified form contains only one negatively voiced item, in order to improve the performance of the instrument among younger participants. Data provided by 10,084 young churchgoers between the ages of 8 and 14 years support the internal consistency reliability and construct validity of the instrument across the age range and commend the instrument for further use in research among this age group.
