“…Data for phonolites from Wedepohl et al (1994) are also shown. The tephrites, phonotephrites, phonolites, trachytes and the tephriphonolite from this study plot in the ´depleted field´ relative to Bulk Earth in the Sr-Nd isotope diagram similar to other alkaline rocks from central Europe (Wörner et al, 1986;Wilson and Downes, 1991;Wedepohl et al, 1994;Jung and Masberg, 1998;Jung and Hoernes, 2000;Bogaard and Wörner, 2003;Haase et al, 2004;Jung et al, 2006) but slightly below the inferred parental mafic melts. Figure 7 ‰ which is essentially the same range as observed in the more primitive alkaline rocks.…”

“…Volcanism commenced in the Early Miocene (~ 22-23 Ma), however, the main phase of activity began ~ 18 Myr ago and peaked between 16 and 17 Ma. The Rhön and Northern Hessian Depression volcanic fields are closely related, both spatially and temporally, to the Vogelsberg and erupted a similar range of magma types (Wedepohl et al, 1994;Jung & Hoernes, 2000).In the East and West Eifel volcanic fields about 300, typically small-volume, eruptions occurred from monogenetic centres between 700,000 and 10,800 BP (Schmincke et al, 1983;Wörner et al, 1986), associated with about 250 m of uplift. The volume of magma erupted is quite small (about 15 km 3 ), but the actual volume of magma generated at mantle depths must have been significantly greater (70-100 km 3 ; G. Wörner, personal communication, 2004).…”

“…The isotope signatures of Cenozoic volcanics in Europe suggest the presence of subducted material in the European subcontinental mantle (Worner et al, 1986;Wilson and Downes, 1991), and the peridotite xenoliths from these regions had gone through a variety of metasomatic events (e.g. Stoch and Seck, 1980;Witt-Eickschen et al, 1993;Witt-Eickschen et al, 2003).…”
