“…The FT identified here bears some resemblance to Pinkus' 'Mantelhaare', which show apron-like buds that can display basaloid cells, and whose frequency is greatly increased in patients with acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa. 19,20 Our understanding of 'Mantelhaare', which remain to be systematically investigated, is that they represent unusually large, 'activated' vellus hair follicles that are in the process of transformation into terminal or lanugo hairs. As we have exclusively investigated regular terminal scalp hHFs in anagen VI, it is highly unlikely that the FT described here is identical with the apron-like buds of Pinkus' Mantelhaare.…”

“…The histopathologic findings of sporotrichosis are best characterized by the identification of round to oval spores measuring 4 to 6 |i.m in diameter on periodic acid-Schiff stain; the spores stain stronger in the periphery of the le¬ sion.7 On occasion, cigar-shaped bodies, as well as single and multiple buds, may also be present.5 Asteroid bodies are rarely found in cases of sporotrichosis in the United States. 8 Depending on the age of the lesion and the immune status of the patient, a nonspecific inflammatory infiltrate or small, well-formed granulomas can be seen. Culture ofthe involved tissue or fluid on Sabouraud agar will support the growth of S schenchii.…”
