Spinning projectile’s angular measurement using crest and trough data of a geomagnetic sensor

Abstract: As a projectile's attitude measurement is significant for flight control, the 'crest and trough method' only based on the geomagnetic sensor signal is proposed to improve the angular measurement accuracy. Firstly, the geomagnetic sensor distribution is introduced, then the mathematical deduction is expatiated and the procedure of the 'crest and trough method' is elaborated. Based on the drawbacks of existing methods, the proposed method focuses on improvements that are vital to enhance the measurement accuracy… Show more

“…As we all know, the higher the attitude update rate, the higher the accuracy of pose estimation. In order to improve the attitude update rate, Zhou et al [16] proposed a Crest and Trough Method. This method introduces two reference curves B w b , B v b by linearly computing the actual output of the three-axis magnetometer.…”

“…At the same time, this method can performed four attitude update in one roll cycle. Zhou et al [16] proposed a crest and trough method. This method can double the attitude update rate in one roll cycle, but increased the previous curve calibration workload.…”

“…In order to measure the attitude of the high-spin projectile, various approaches have been proposed by numerous scholars. According to published literatures, the main sensors used for high-spin attitude measurement are as follow: solar azimuth sensor [ 6 ], continuous-wave radar [ 7 ], infrared sensor [ 8 ], Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) [ 9 ], magnetometer [ 10 ], accelerometer [ 11 ], gyroscope, [ 12 ] and so on. The measurement based on the solar azimuth sensor has high requirements for the visible conditions of the atmosphere.…”

“…Under the condition of high overload, high rotation speed, and limited space, the accurate measurement of the attitude of high spinning projectiles has not been effectively solved. According to the published literature, the currently used attitude measuring sensors mainly have gyroscope [2], accelerometer [3], magnetometer [4], GNSS [5], continuous wave radar [6], infrared sensor [7], solar azimuth sensor [8], and so on. Among them, the gyroscope is a typical angular rate sensor.…”
