Spicy Bitumen: Curcumin Effects on the Rheological and Adhesion Properties of Asphalt

Abstract: Over the years, the need for the synthesis of biodegradable materials has facilitated the drift of the asphalt industry towards eco-sustainable and cost-effective production of road pavements. The principal additives in the asphalt industry to improve the performance of road pavements and increase its lifespan are majorly rheological modifiers, adhesion promoters and anti-oxidant agents. Rheological modifiers increase physico-chemical properties such as transition temperature of asphalt binder (bitumen), adhes… Show more

“…Curcumin was purchased from Carbosynth and used without further purification as we already reported the highest grade of purity of this supplier with respect to other commercially available sources. 44 All other reagents and solvents were purchased from Aldrich Chemical Co. or Alfa Aesar and were used without further purification. Cycloplatinated precursors [(pn)PtCl 2 ], I , 45 [(pic)PtCl 2 ], II , 46 [(bipy)PtCl 2 ], III , 46 and [(bipy-C 9 )PtCl 2 ], IV 47 were synthesised following methods already reported.…”

“…In the process of road construction, styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS)-modified asphalt and polyurethane (PU)-modified asphalt currently play significant roles in improving the pavement performance and extending the pavement life, and are widely used in high-grade asphalt pavement surface layers due to their excellent high- and low-temperature performance and good fatigue resistance [ 5 , 6 ]. With the development of nanotechnology, nano-modified asphalt has become one of the highlights of agro-scientific research in the field of road materials [ 7 9 ].…”

“…Since further oxidation can take place also after paving in a slower process called ageing which also involves loss of more volatile components and structural aggregations [19], the same problem holds also for longer times. For this, additives, usually based on strong acids or bases, are present on the market [20][21][22], but eco-friendly additives are recently being studied [23][24][25][26][27][28].…”
