Spermatozoa from normozoospermic fertile and infertile individuals convey a distinct miRNA cargo

Abstract: Deciphering the underlying causes of idiopathic male infertility is one of the main challenges in reproductive medicine. This is especially relevant in infertile patients displaying normal seminal parameters and no urogenital or genetic abnormalities. In these cases, the search for additional sperm biomarkers is of high interest. This study was aimed to determine the implications of the sperm miRNA expression profiles in the reproductive capacity of normozoospermic infertile individuals. The expression level o… Show more

“…However, it is now understood that sperm sRNAs actively contribute to sperm function, early embryo development and transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. Therefore, sRNAs may potentially hold diagnostic value for assessment of the fertility status of a male (Salas-Huetos et al 2016). This potential has served as a catalyst for several recent studies that utilised either a microarray or high-throughput sequencing approach to catalogue the RNA profile of spermatozoa.…”

“…Furthermore, the role of the particular miRNAs targeted genes has been found in the apoptosis, the integrity of the mitochondrial membrane and alteration in spermatogenesis, representing its role in fertility. Performing TaqMan Array Human MicroRNA of spermatozoa from the patients affirms that infertile and fertile persons convey different miRNA cargos pointing its role in male reproductive performance (Salas‐Huetos et al, ). Collectively, miRNAs play important role in regulating every step of male germ cell development, which comprises mitosis, meiosis and spermiogenesis (Mciver, Roman, Nixon, & Mclaughlin, ).…”
