Abstract: Two moles of desferrioxamine B (desferal) combines with one ion of cerium(IV), Fe(1V) and U(V1) to form intensely coloured chelates having molar absorptivities of 3.8 x lo4, 5 5 x lo4 and 1.9 x lo4 mol-I cm-' at 443 nm, 293 nm and 376 nm respectively. The system follows Beer's law up to 1.5 pg ml-l. The effect of desferal concentration, pH, time and foreign species are studied. The results of analysis of simulated wastes are reported.
