Spectral-Domain OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY of a Macular Fold AFTER Retinal Detachment Repair

Abstract: This outcome suggests the possibility of delayed postoperative success in flattening a retinal fold despite resistance to manipulation and failed attempts during the course of the surgery. To our knowledge, this is the first report that demonstrates this finding within the macular architecture after retinal detachment surgery in vivo using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. These findings may have an important role in management of these cases and may become prognostic indicators based on the altera… Show more

“…2,[7][8][9]11,[16][17][18] Kesen and colleagues have described a surgical technique that involves massaging the retina with a soft-tip cannula after injection of BSS and bleb formation in an attempt to detach the macula. 10 This approach failed to flatten the fold intraoperatively, however, but the fold appeared to resolve spontaneously with observation 2 months postoperatively. Barale et al suggested redetaching the retina by injecting both BSS and filtered air and then using PFCL to flatten the retina again.…”

“…Surgical intervention at different time points after the diagnosis of macular fold has been described with some success. 2,[7][8][9][10][11] Others have reported spontaneous resolution of macular folds with conservative management and with variable visual outcomes. 1,3,12,13 In this article, we report a case of macular fold following retina reattachment surgery that resolved spontaneously over 12 months' time with alternative postoperative positioning and improvement of visual acuity.…”
